Dog Mountain Farm

To finally follow up with this post, a few weeks ago when I was home in Washington, my mom and I took a trip out to Carnation on a whim, to find fresh eggs. We went to Dog Mountain Farm, a surprise to us, although this farm has been operating for nine years. The farm sits on a ridge with a beautiful view of the mountains. The farm welcomes visitors daily, and you can buy directly from the farm.

Cindy greeted us as we drove up, and offered us a tour of the farm. Dog Mountain Farm has certified naturally grown vegetables, fruit, eggs, herbs, flowers, and chicken.

Our tour started with the chickens, and moved into the hot houses, the goat pen, then down to see the horses. We saw the orchards and bee hive, and learned about their natural growing processes- no hormones, no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or antibiotics. They raise happy, healthy animals, and safe, natural foods.

We bought a few dozen eggs, and went home and immediately made a little meal of fresh poached eggs on kale with toast. The taste of fresh eggs is so different- the color and texture of the eggs is better, and you know these eggs didn't come from tortured chickens in airless little filthy boxes like grocery store eggs. I know a lot of people trust that food from the store guarantees that it is healthy and safe, but this just isn't true.

I know many don't like to think about where their food comes from, but I can't understand why anyone would trust the food they don't want to look at or know about. If you don't want to think about where it came from, you probably shouldn't be eating it.

If you live in the area, I would really recommend visiting Dog Mountain Farm. It is a short drive from Redmond, and not too much further from Seattle. We had a fun afternoon, and a good talk with Cindy, who welcomed us back anytime. I know I'd like to go back later in the season to sample more of their produce, and see their flowers in bloom... and would love to try the Farm Dinners held in the summer. These meals are multi-course meals with wine pairings, served out in the orchard, and prepared by well-known visiting chefs (like Josh Henderson from Skillet).
