Today's Secret Project comes from a certain someone very near (and dear) to my heart. This isn't his first Secret Project either. In fact, you've probably seen his work all over this blog. As some of you might recall, his first Secret Project was all about analog music. Click here to refresh your memory if necessary.
So here it is, The Intern's 2nd Secret Project. While I adore everything my Intern does, I especially enjoyed this project, since it has made life easier and breezier. Seriously.
Enjoy!
Our spice drawer is a pain. It's messy, unorganized, and I can never find the right spices without having to remove almost everything from the drawer.
We've had this spice carousel for a while now, but never used it. The spice jars had no labels on them, and I get confused between thyme and rosemary, or ground cumin and garam masala (my mom's homemade blend, not store bought).
To fix this, I decided to create my own labels using chalkbaord paint and chalk. Here's how:
what you'll need:
1. spice jars of any shape and size
2. some chalkboard paint (I used the leftover chalkboard paint we had from our dining table project)
3. paint brush
4. masking tape (I used blue painter's tape)
instructions:
1. prepare a clean surface to work on. I happened to do this project on the dining table that is already painted in chalkboard paint, so spills didn't matter!
2. using the masking tape, section off areas of the spice jar that you don't want painted, and create the shape of the label you'll be painting; this is the "negative space".
3. using the paint brush, apply the chalkboard paint to the negative space created on the spicejar.
4. wait for the first coat to dry. I waited about 15 minutes before applying the second coat.
5. apply the second coat of paint.
6. remove masking tape once the second coat of paint has dried.
7. let the paint cure before using. Chalkboard paint requires about 3 days before you can write on it.
8. use chalk or chalkboard markers to write in the name of the spice in your spice jar.
Cook dinners and make 'em spicy!
