Secret Project number eight

Hello Friends,

It  is Thursday, Secret Project Day... and this week's project is by me. I had some glorious free time last weekend, enough to gather all the supplies, start the project, and actually almost completely finish it. This is pretty huge, considering the fact I can barely watch a movie anymore without falling to sleep in the first half. All my free time belongs to grad school, except for last weekend, when I liberated a few hours for myself!

Here we go!

How make your own embellished cardigan, without spending $200 at Anthropologie

Supplies:
+A warm cardigan, new or one you already have in your closet. I bought this wool sweater at Zara over the weekend for $50.
+Needle and thread and straight pins
+lace, ribbon, or some embellishment of your choice

I found this pretty Swiss lace in a cool gray at Britex Fabrics on the third floor. It is vintage, so it is really delicate. I picked up a spool of  thread to match the gray lace. My project partner Caitlin also bought some lace there that had some age spots on it, so we washed it in a warm solution of water and Oxiclean- after a few minutes we rinsed it and let it air dry. Age spots were gone, and it was gentle enough for the lace that we didn't have to worry about destroying the fibers.

Next, we warmed ironed our lace so it would lay flat, then pinned it to the collars of our sweaters. This part took some time to figure out the placement of the lace, so there wouldn't be any puckering along the way.

After the lace was pinned the way we liked it, we started to stitch the lace. This part took a few hours for Caitlin, and it is going to take a few more hours for me... hopefully I'll find those hours soon.

I did a running stitch around the perimeter of the lace to keep it in place, then went back around, making small stitches around the edges to keep it from puckering, and I stitched the whole piece down so I won't need to warm iron any folded pieces of lace each time I wear it.

Caitlin's finished project.

and... my almost finished secret project.
